Preparing for a Master oral exam — whether Master 200, Master 500-3000 or a larger command certificate — requires a step up in preparation from OOW-level revision. The examiner is no longer asking whether you can safely keep a watch. They are assessing whether you can command a vessel, manage a crew, make critical decisions under pressure and take full professional responsibility for the vessel's safety.

Understanding the Difference Between Routes

Master 200 covers vessels up to 200 gross tonnage. Master 500-3000 covers vessels up to 3,000 gross tonnage. Master Unlimited covers all vessels of any size in any waters. While the core knowledge areas overlap significantly, the scope, depth and context of questioning increases with the size of certificate.

Master candidates should expect questioning not just on navigation and regulations, but on command decision-making, passage planning at higher levels, stability, cargo, crew management, safety management and emergency coordination.

Review the specific syllabus for your exact exam route carefully. The MCA publishes guidance on the knowledge areas for each certificate level. Focus your preparation accordingly.

Core Command Knowledge

As a Master candidate, you are expected to demonstrate command-level understanding, not just officer-level knowledge. This means understanding not just what the correct action is in a scenario, but why, what the alternatives were, what the regulatory basis is, how you would communicate your decisions to the crew, and how you would document what occurred.

Passage Planning

Passage planning at Master level involves a deeper examination of the four stages — appraisal, planning, execution and monitoring — with greater emphasis on the Master's overall responsibility. Examiners expect detailed understanding of waypoint selection, clearing bearings, contingency plans, voyage-specific hazards, weather routing, and the preparation and briefing of navigating officers.

Examiner May Ask

"Walk me through how you would brief the navigating officers on a passage plan for a coastal voyage in restricted waters — what specific hazards and decisions would you cover?"

Stability and Vessel Limitations

Master candidates must understand stability at a practical level — not just the theory, but how stability is managed in real loading conditions, how weather conditions affect stability, and what the warning signs of inadequate stability look like. Understand the stability booklet, load line requirements, and the impact of free surface effect and water on deck.

Emergency Response and Command

At Master level, emergency response questions focus on command and coordination, not just initial actions. How would you coordinate a fire response? How would you decide whether to abandon ship? How would you manage crew, communication, reporting and documentation in a major emergency? The examiner is assessing your fitness to command, not just your knowledge of procedures.

Common Mistake: Describing OOW-Level Emergency Responses

Master candidates who describe emergency responses as if they were the OOW — focused only on initial actions — miss the command dimension entirely. Always answer from the Master's perspective: coordination, communication, decision-making and responsibility.

Crew Management

Master candidates should be able to discuss crew management, fatigue management, STCW rest hours, the role of the Master under MLC 2006, and the responsibilities of the Master regarding crew welfare, discipline and working conditions.

Safety Management

The ISM Code is central to Master-level examination. Understand the purpose of the SMS, the role of the Designated Person Ashore, the Master's authority under the ISM Code, the requirements for non-conformity reporting, and the Master's absolute authority override provision.

COLREGs and Watchkeeping

COLREGs remain a central topic at all command levels. Master candidates are expected to demonstrate complete fluency with the regulations and the judgement to apply them in complex scenarios — vessel traffic service interactions, overtaking in confined waters, situations involving multiple vessels, and restricted visibility scenarios with competing demands.

Practical Decision-Making

Master oral exams often present scenarios without obvious right answers — situations where candidates must weigh competing priorities, make decisions with imperfect information and explain their reasoning. Practise thinking through these scenarios aloud. Examiners are assessing the quality of your decision-making process as much as the conclusion you reach.
